WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Ottawa can eliminate Toronto and clinch the fourth and final playoff spot with a win in regulation tonight. Any other result would defer the determination of fourth place to Saturday when the Ontario rivals go head-to-head at TD Place.
All three meetings so far this season between Boston and Ottawa have been decided in shootouts (Ottawa has two wins to Boston’s one) with 13 goals scored in 34 total shootout attempts, accounting for more than 40% of all shootout goals leaguewide. It’s the first matchup in PWHL history that has had three different shootouts in a single regular season.
The Charge scored a PWHL record two short-handed goals and tallied the final five in its 5-1 victory against the Sirens on Saturday, tied for the team’s second-most goals ever in a game. Saturday was the second time Ottawa has scored five unanswered goals in a single game (six straight in 8-3 win vs. Minnesota in Feb. 2025). The Charge’s two straight regulation wins is tied for their longest such streak of the season.
Brianne Jenner tallied three points on Saturday, giving her a team-record 23 points this season. The Charge captain is on a two-game goal streak, improving her team’s all-time record to 21 wins and two losses when she scores, earning the nickname “Big Game Brianne”. Three players have multiple shootout goals in the season series, led by her four on seven attempts (also Hannah Brandt 3/6 and Kateřina Mrázová 2/5).
Rebecca Leslie’s 22 points are tied for the second most in a season in team history, matching Tereza Vanišová’s output last season. She has two goals against Boston and is riding her second three-game point streak of the season (1G, 2A).
Michela Cava became one of the first two PWHL players to reach 100 career games on Saturday, with the milestone including her 18 playoff games in two title runs with Minnesota. She has three assists in 15 games with the Charge after being acquired midseason from the Goldeneyes.
The Charge were represented at the Boston Marathon Monday by Kathryn Reilly’s Mother, Leslie, who ran for the first time since 2007 and finished with a time of 4:04:48.
Boston can reclaim sole possession of first place heading into Saturday’s finale with a regulation win tonight, currently two points behind Montréal. The first-place team earns the opportunity to select their semifinal playoff opponent, with the choice between third-place Minnesota and fourth (OTT/TOR).
Both of Boston’s remaining regular-season games this season will be played at the Tsongas Center. In their six games at the venue so far this season, the Fleet have a record of 5-1-0-0 while outscoring opponents 15-6. They are 2-0-0-2 against the Charge in Lowell across the league’s first two seasons.
Jessie Eldridge has recorded six goals and an assist in nine games with Boston after having seven goals and six assists with Seattle. She is the first player in PWHL history to have a season with 20 or more points while playing for multiple teams. Her 18 career multi-point games leads all skaters and includes two against the Charge this season with the Torrent. Five of her six Fleet goals have been assisted by Alina Müller.
Daniela Pejšová scored her second goal of the season on Friday bringing Boston’s total number of goals scored by defenders this season to 15. That’s one shy of tying the PWHL team record for most goals by a defense, set by Minnesota in 2024-25. Captain Megan Keller leads the group with seven.
Susanna Tapani leads the season series with three points (1G, 2A) but enters tonight’s action without a point in three games. Her next point will set a new career-high of 19 and bring her career total to 50. She’s also two shots on goal from 56, a total she produced in each of the first two seasons.
Aerin Frankel and Gwyneth Philips, both U.S. Olympians and former Northeastern teammates, have gone head-to-head six times in the PWHL, each winning three games. Philips has the slight edge in saves in those games with 142 to 140.
Müller, Boston’s top scorer, and fellow Olympian Haley Winn, tied for second in PWHL rookie scoring, handed out medals at the finish line of the 130th Boston Marathon Monday. Bruins legend Zdeno Chara, who performed the ceremonial puck drop at the Fleet’s TD Garden debut, received his medal from Alina.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“I think pressure is a privilege and we sure have that right now with two games left. We love it. I think that our group is coming together at the perfect time. We are playing good hockey. We love each other so much. So, I think we're in a good spot and we're excited to be where we are at. All year long, we earned to be in this position. Our fate is in our hands, which is great.”- Charge forward Gabbie Hughes
“We're always looking forward to playing Ottawa, we've had a lot of great games against them in overtime, shootouts. I think this will be a great test for us, playing high level hockey going into the playoffs. Pride night will definitely be fun, too. Every year it's awesome to highlight and thankfully we see the support every game, not just for Pride. The league has done a really great job of making everyone feel welcome and hopefully we see a lot of rainbows in Tsongas.” – Fleet alternate captain Jamie Lee Rattray
