WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

This is the first and only game between the teams in Toronto this season. Seattle picked up a 3-2 shootout win when these teams met in Hamilton on Jan. 3. That’s the only win outside of Seattle for the Torrent this season (0-0-1-7 in their other games outside Seattle). The teams split their two games at Climate Pledge Arena, each winning by multiple goals.

The Torrent lost to Minnesota, 4-1, in St. Paul on Friday. It was their fifth straight road loss and seventh loss by multiple goals this season, tied with Toronto and Vancouver for the most in the league. Seattle and Toronto each have two multi-goal wins, tied for the fewest in the league.

Lexie Adzija scored Seattle’s lone goal on Friday, her fourth of the season. Two of her other three goals this season came against Toronto, including the team’s first-ever shorthanded ‘jailbreak’ goal. In her PWHL career, she has four goals in 14 games against Toronto and eight goals in 57 games against all other opponents. She’s also one of seven players with two career shorthanded goals, along with Toronto’s Emma Maltais.

Adzija (St. Thomas) is one of six Torrent players from Ontario, along with Megan Carter (Milton), Jessie Eldridge (Barrie), Julia Gosling (London), Mikyla Grant-Mentis (Brampton) and Hannah Murphy (Bradford), with lots of family and friends in attendance today at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

Danielle Serdachny has four points in Seattle’s last five games, currently riding her second two-game point streak this season and the third of her career. She’s one point away from matching her rookie point total (8) with Ottawa.

Alex Carpenter won 16 of her 25 faceoffs on Friday to bring her season total to 257 wins on 429 attempts (59.9%). She has 57 more wins and 83 more attempts than the next closest skaters. Her four points (1G, 3A) in three games against Toronto this season is tied with Eldridge for the most on the Torrent.

The Torrent have scored just 69.2% of their goals at even strength, lowest in the league (23.1% power play, 7.7% shorthanded). Toronto has scored 87.2% of its goals at even strength, second highest in the league (Vancouver, 88.6%).

The Sceptres lost to the Frost, 3-2, in overtime at home last Sunday, their second straight extra-time defeat (4-3 shootout loss to Montréal). It’s the first time Toronto has played back-to-back extra-time games this season – the Sceptres have never played three such games in a row.

Daryl Watts had a goal and an assist last Sunday, her third straight game with an assist (1G, 3A). Watts has 15 points to lead the Sceptres this season, five more than any other teammate (Blayre Turnbull, 10). That’s the largest gap between a team points leader and second place in the league. Her five points (1G, 4A) in three games against Seattle leads the season series.

Renata Fast leads all defenders in scoring post-Olympics with four points (1G, 3A) in five games. The Sceptres alternate captain has assists in consecutive games, while four of her seven points this season have come when Toronto has been the home team (4A), including an assist in the first game of the season series on Jan. 3. Her only multi-point game of the season (1G, 1A), was Feb. 27 in Seattle.

The highest scoring games for both teams have come in the season series, including Seattle’s six goals on Jan. 20 and Toronto’s five goals on Feb. 27.

Raygan Kirk has made five straight starts for Toronto and has played in all three games of the season series, posting a 3.24 goals-against average and .903 save percentage against the Torrent. She has made more than 25 saves in all three of those games and ranks second in the PWHL with 11 such games.

Six of Toronto’s 15 first period goals have been scored in the game’s first five minutes, tied with Minnesota for most in the PWHL. Seattle is the only team in the league without a goal in the game’s first five minutes and have surrendered six such goals, tied with Vancouver for most in the PWHL.

The Sceptres’ Adult Skills and Drills wrapped up its six-week run with a scrimmage with special guest coaches Turnbull and Maltais. To mark the end of the program, the group had a celebration with the Sceptres coaching staff and front office.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“With the quick turnaround and an early 1 p.m. start, our focus is on resetting both mentally and physically. We’ve already turned the page from the last game and are concentrating on what it takes to start fast. Early games demand good energy, strong details, and a commitment to our team play right from the opening shift.” – Torrent Head Coach Steve O’Rourke

“We have so much support from our young fans, and this game is special to be able to celebrate them, and the support

systems who help them be able to play the game they love. We’ve had some great games against Seattle this year, so we know what to expect. They’re a hardworking team, and for us it’s about being strong on the walls, managing the puck well, and making sure we’re solid in all three zones.” – Sceptres forward Emma Gentry

SUNDAY’S GAME: It’s the fourth and final game of the regular season series between the Sceptres and Torrent and Seattle’s first-ever trip to Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum. Fans will get their first opportunity to welcome back former Sceptres Carly ‘CJ’ Jackson, Megan Carter and Julia Gosling with a special in-game tribute. It’s Toronto’s Kids and Youth Hockey Day presented by Milk. To celebrate the theme, many Sceptres players will wear their minor hockey jerseys for walk-ins. This is notable as the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) is celebrating their 50th anniversary. Twelve of Toronto’s 26 players honed their skills in the OWHA: Elaine Chuli, Claire Dalton, Kristin Della Rovere, Renata Fast, Emma Maltais, Jessie McPherson, Lauren Messier, Ella Shelton, Natalie Spooner, Daryl Watts, Emma Woods, and Kiara Zanon. Fans should be on the lookout for Poulet Rouge on the scene, bringing their mascot to the concourse, as well as the Canadian Tire ‘My Team, My Sign’ station. The Sceptres are happy to welcome the Belmont Blazers, Collingwood Women and Girls Hockey Association, Guelph Gryphons Girls Hockey Association, Lambton Attack and Whitby Wolves to the game. Upon exit, 4,500 fans will receive a giveaway from Milk, while quantities last.
