WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The second game of the only tripleheader in the PWHL schedule this season has playoff implications for both of these teams looking to lock up one of the final two spots. Minnesota can clinch with a regulation win, or an overtime/shootout win if Ottawa loses in regulation to Toronto. Boston needs at least a single point or an Ottawa loss to clinch.
The Frost are no strangers to playing under pressure on the road, having won on Wednesday in Ottawa (3-0) to keep their playoff hopes alive. Last season, they won Game 5 of the playoff semifinal series in Toronto (4-1), and Game 5 of the PWHL Finals in Boston (3-0) to capture the Walter Cup.
The Frost’s last five games have been decided by multiple goals, which is tied for the longest such streak in PWHL history. Minnesota has had 15 of their 29 games this season decided by multiple goals (51.7%) after having 10 of their 24 games last season decided by such a margin (41.7%).
Lee Stecklein scored her first two goals of the season in her last game against Ottawa. She is the third U.S.-born defender to have a multi-goal game this season, along with the Fleet’s Sidney Morin (Jan. 11) and Megan Keller (Dec. 8).
Nicole Hensley’s (30 y, 311 d) first shutout of the season came in her last game against the Charge. She is the second PWHL player (including playoffs) to record a shutout at 30 years or older, along with Ann-Renée Desbiens on Apr. 27, 2024 (30 y, 17 d).
Kendall Coyne Schofield has at least one point in four straight games against the Fleet, tied for the longest streak by any PWHL player this season. The Frost captain’s six points (2G, 4A) against Boston this season are also tied for most in the PWHL, along with Shiann Darkangelo and Laura Stacey.
Claire Thompson will appear next week on The Roku Channel’s “Women’s Sports Now” show, which covers topics in women's sports, expert insights and insider coverage of the week's most newsworthy moments. The show premiered last month on Roku and is available to stream at no charge.
This will only be Minnesota’s fourth game played on a Saturday this season, fewest in the PWHL. All three previous such games ended in regulation, with the Frost losing two of them.
Boston has won eight of their ten games so far this season at the Tsongas Center and rank third in the PWHL with an overall home record of 6-3-1-4 (.595). Minnesota ranks fourth in the PWHL on the road with a record of 4-2-3-5 (.452).
The Fleet scored both of their goals in Monday’s overtime loss in Montréal in the third period. Boston has 30 total goals in the third period this season, most in the PWHL, and have nine games with multiple third period goals, tied with Toronto for most in the PWHL.
Boston went 0-for-4 on the power play in their last game against the Victoire. That was the sixth time the Fleet have gone 0-for-4 or worse on the power play this season, tied for most in the PWHL (Montréal, New York).
Hannah Brandt recorded her first shorthanded goal of the season in her last game against Montréal after having one shorthanded goal last season. The only other PWHL player to have a ‘jailbreak’ goal in both seasons is Gabbie Hughes of the Charge.
Hannah Bilka enters the game with the league’s longest active point streak at four games (2G, 2A), half of which have come in the rookie’s two games since her LTIR activation on Apr. 26.
Hilary Knight leads the season series with seven points (4G, 3A) and enters the day as the league’s points leader. The Fleet captain has recorded multiple shots on goal in 39 straight games, including all 29 of her games this season. The next-longest active streak in the PWHL is 14 by Laura Stacey.
Susanna Tapani is the only PWHL player this season to have at least a 20.0 shooting percentage and an average 20 minutes of ice time. For comparison, just two NHL players did so in 2024-25 (min. 5GP) in the Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl and Jets’ Mark Scheifele.
Tapani holds the unique distinction of playing in 26 games during the inaugural season between these two teams which would make this her league-leading 56th career game. Eleven players can make history today by playing in every regular season game in their team’s first two seasons including the Fleet’s Brandt, Keller, Knight, Morin, Jessica DiGirolamo and Jamie Lee Rattray, and the Frost’s Coyne Schofield, Stecklein, Michela Cava, Denisa Křížová and Kelly Pannek.
Loren Gabel has been fostering a 2-year-old husky named Deuce over the past week, who she met during the Fleet’s visit to the Lowell Humane Society in April. Deuce will be attending today’s game to drive interest in finding a forever home.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“It’s a really fun time of year where we are getting to play elimination games. It’s exciting for players, coaches, fans, and everyone involved. Just like last season, we just need to win one game!” - Frost Head Coach Ken Klee.
“Our team identity all year has been gritty, playing physical and having all four lines looking for opportunities to score. We’re hoping to play physical, have a good start and focus on playing together right from puck drop.” - Fleet forward Hannah Bilka.
SATURDAY’S GAME: It’s the Fleet’s Goalie Appreciation Game at the Tsongas Center. There will be a ceremonial puck drop performed by former Boston Bruins goaltender, 2011 Stanley Cup Champion and Finnish Olympic bronze medalist, Tuukka Rask. Fans can expect a rally towel giveaway and special goaltender content on the videoboard highlighting Aerin Frankel. Emma Söderberg and Klára Peslarová.
