WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
This is the third game between these teams this season, with the home team winning each game by four goals (5-1 in Newark, 4-0 in Vancouver). Prior to the first meeting, New York had never won a home game by more than three goals.
The Goldeneyes lost to Minnesota, 2-1, in overtime in a Takeover Tour game in Edmonton on Saturday. Vancouver is now 0-0-1-3 when scoring one or zero goals this season and 2-1-0-1 when scoring multiple goals. The team is also still looking for its first win away from Pacific Coliseum (0-0-1-3).
Izzy Daniel scored Vancouver’s lone goal on Saturday, her first point of the season. The 2024 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner had registered two total shots on goal over her first six games but has multiple shots in each of her last two games.
Sophie Jaques leads the season series with three points (1G, 2A) in two games and scored Vancouver’s only goal Nov. 29 at Prudential Center. The 2023 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner is second in shots on goal by a defender this season with 22 and led the league last year with 75 on Minnesota.
Emerance Maschmeyer stopped 37 shots last year on New Year’s Eve in a 2-1 win for Ottawa over Toronto. It was an eventful game for several Goldeneyes, with Hannah Miller scoring the Sceptres lone goal, assisted by Daniel, and Tereza Vanišová, who led the league in penalties, assessed a major.
Madison Samoskevich, Vancouver’s fifth-round pick in 2025, is from Sandy Hook, CT, a 90-minute drive from Prudential Center. She followed in her sister Melissa’s footsteps at Quinnipiac University, and as a pro hockey player, with Melissa a former member of the PHF’s Connecticut Whale. Melissa served as an assistant coach at Princeton in 2023-24 under Cara Gardner Morey on a Tigers team led by Sarah Fillier.
Goldeneyes players took time to reflect on 2025 by sharing a number of personal highlights: Abby Boreen finished Pharmacy School, Katie Chan played for three teams in three different countries, Jenn Gardiner hiked Goat Ridge Trail in Chilliwack, Michelle Karvinen joined the PWHL at age 35, Maschmeyer has continued her pro hockey career as a mother, Gabby Rosenthal hiked Half Dome in Yosemite, Anna Segedi got her master’s degree at St. Lawrence, and Claire Thompson passed her second med school board exam.
The Sirens beat the Torrent, 4-3, in a Takeover Tour game in Dallas on Sunday after a 4-3 loss to Toronto in their prior game. New York has scored at least three goals in four of its eight games this season – they did so in just four of their final 18 games last season.
Casey O’Brien scored her first, second and third career goals on Sunday as PWHL Player of the Week, the second hat trick by a Siren this season after Taylor Girard had one in the season opener. The rest of the league has combined for one hat trick this season (Kendall Coyne Schofield), and New York had only one prior hat trick entering this season (Jade Downie-Landry on Jan. 20, 2024). O’Brien rounds out a trio of former Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award recipients in this game, earning the prestigious honor in 2025 at Wisconsin.
Jaime Bourbonnais had a career-high three assists on Sunday after going without a point in her first five games of the season. It was the third three-assist game in Sirens history – Ella Shelton had three helpers on Jan. 14, 2024, New York’s fourth-ever game, and rookie Maddi Wheeler, who scored her first career goal on Sunday, had three assists in her PWHL debut.
Kayle Osborne has anchored the Sirens crease as the only PWHL goaltender to play every one of her team’s games. Her 30 saves on Sunday were a season-high and just the fifth time in her career she’s stopped 30 or more shots.
Jincy Roese scored the game-winner for the Charge last New Year’s Eve against the Sceptres, one of three goals for the defender in 2024-25. With two assists in eight games, she’s still looking for her first goal as a member of the Sirens.
New York has outshot Vancouver 56-41 in two games. The Sirens lead the PWHL with an average of 33.63 shots per game and have outshot their opponent in all eight games this season. The Goldeneyes have the lowest average shots on goal per game at 24.25 and have never led a game in shots.
Madison Packer, who spent the inaugural season as a New York forward, makes her PWHL broadcasting debut as an analyst. Prior to the PWHL, she played eight PHF seasons with the Metropolitan Riveters, including four as captain, winning the 2018 Isobel Cup next door at the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House at Prudential Center.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“We're one and one against New York this season. Obviously, we played very well at home last game against them, and that was really nice to get the win. I think they're a very skilled team, a young team, and they've had a lot of success offensively lately. We need to be sound defensively on our end to shut them down and do everything we can to protect our goalie at the net front, as well as get in front of their goalie's eyes, I think that is going to be key for us.” – Goldeneyes forward Jenn Gardiner
“Any time we get the chance to play in front of our fans, there’s an extra level of energy. We’re looking forward to building on our previous game and continue to build and grow as a team. Our focus is on competing the right way from the start, staying committed to our details, and continuing to build as a group.” – Sirens Head Coach Greg Fargo
WEDNESDAY’S GAME: Happy New Year! It’s the last PWHL game of 2025 as New York welcomes Vancouver to Prudential Center for the second and final time of the regular season. Fans can check out the Midea Sign Making Kiosk on the concourse and enjoy in-game entertainment on the videoboard with the e.l.f. Dance Cam and the Bread Financial Fan of the Game. Youth hockey continues to be highlighted with the Sirens High Five Tunnel, Bench Buddies featuring the Jr. Flyers, and Anthem Buddies from Pawling Youth Hockey, creating an energetic atmosphere as the calendar year comes to a close on home ice. This is the first-ever New Year’s Eve matinee in PWHL history, with last season’s game on Dec. 31 between Ottawa and Toronto played at 7 p.m. The Sirens will play in both the PWHL’s final game of 2025 and the first game of 2026 when they host Montréal at 1 p.m. on Friday. The PWHL schedule is more than a quarter of the way completed with this being game number 33 of 120 in 2025-26 and game number 116 (including playoffs) in 2025.
