SAN JOSE, CA – PWHL San Jose today announced that forward Sloane Matthews and goaltender Tia Chan have each been signed to three-year Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) Standard Player Agreements through the 2028-29 season. Matthews was selected in the second round, 16th overall, and Chan was selected in the third round, 28th overall in the 2026 PWHL Draft on June 17.
Matthews joins the PWHL following four seasons at The Ohio State University where she won a National Championship in 2024 and recorded 104 points (48G, 56A) in 161 career collegiate games. During the 2025-26 campaign, the 22-year-old from Wayzata, MN, established new career highs in goals (20), assists (24), and points (44), while leading the Buckeyes with seven power play tallies. On PWHL San Jose, Matthews becomes the eighth forward under contract and reunites with fellow OSU alumnae Maddi Wheeler and Hadley Hartmetz.
Chan turns pro on the heels of winning the 2025-26 Women’s College Hockey Goalie of the Year Award and earning First Team All-American honors with the University of Connecticut. The 24-year-old from Hamilton, ON, capped her five-year collegiate tenure with a 1.55 goals-against average in 37 appearances last season and set Huskies’ single-season records for wins (27), saves (1,122) and save percentage (.951) before graduating as the program’s all-time leader in wins (70), shutouts (25), and SV% (.946). An Olympian representing China in 2022, Chan rounds out the PWHL San Jose goaltending trio alongside Corinne Schroeder and Abbey Levy.
The signings follow last Monday’s announcement that Laila Edwards, San Jose’s fourth overall draft pick, had also been inked to a three-year agreement. The team’s top three inaugural draft picks are the only rostered players among the 16 currently under contract who are signed through 2028-29.
