WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Minnesota is the only team to deliver a shutout against Seattle with the Frost’s 3-0 victory in the Torrent’s home opener in November. The Torrent were outscored 2-0 in the third period that game despite having 18 shots on goal, the team’s most in any period this season.
Including its lone goal Wednesday against Boston, half of Seattle’s goals this season have been in the third period (9/18). That’s the second-highest percentage of goals scored in a particular period by any PWHL team this season (VAN – 52.4% in the third).
Hilary Knight recorded her seventh assist of the season on Wednesday, bringing her career point total to 48 (22G, 26A). The Torrent captain and soon-to-be five-time Olympian ranks fifth in all-time PWHL scoring, and alongside alternate captain Alex Carpenter (24G, 26A) and Frost captain Kendall Coyne Schofield (26G, 25A), comprise the highest scoring American trio in PWHL history with 149 combined points.
Carpenter has won 124 faceoffs this season, the most by any PWHL player. Her faceoff win percentage this season is 60.5% (124/205) while all other Seattle players have a combined FOW% of 42.6 percent (120/282).
Julia Gosling will play her first PWHL game since being named to Canada’s roster for her first Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina on Friday. She is currently tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points and has not gone more than one game all season without finding the scoresheet.
Brooke Bryant, who signed with Seattle following Training Camp, returns to Minnesota for the first time as a member of the Torrent after winning back-to-back Walter Cup titles with the Frost. The forward recorded five points (2G, 3A) in 49 career regular season games in her first two seasons.
Seattle has six players from Minnesota on its roster, including alternate captain Emily Brown (Blaine) and forwards Lily Delianedis (Edina) and Natalie Snodgrass (Eagan). The team’s Reserves consist of Jada Habisch (Buffalo), Sydney Langseth (Eden Prairie) and Emily Zumwinkle (Excelsior) who is part of the league’s first-ever sister duo with Frost forward Grace Zumwinkle. The pair played one collegiate season together at the University of Minnesota in 2022-23.
The Frost will be playing at Grand Casino Arena for just the third time this season and the first time since a 5-2 win over Boston on Dec. 19. Every other PWHL team has played at least four home games already this season entering Sunday (excluding Takeover Tour games). Minnesota picked up seven of a possible 15 points in their last five games away from home.
Kendall Cooper has had at least one assist in six straight games, the longest assist streak in PWHL history. The Frost first-round pick and fellow defender Mae Batherson are both riding six-game point streaks, tied for the second-longest in PWHL regular season history. Carpenter holds the record with a seven-game streak last year with New York.
Coyne Schofield has 48 points at even strength in her PWHL career (25G, 23A). She is looking to be the first player in league history to reach 50 even-strength points. The next-closest player is Marie-Philip Poulin (46 EV points). So far this season, just one of her 11 points, tied for the league-lead, have come on the power play.
Kelly Pannek (2G) and Britta Curl-Salemme (2A) both had multi-point games in the Frost’s first meeting with the Torrent. Pannek leads the league with four multi-point games, matching her total in the league’s first two seasons. All 11 of Curl-Salemme’s points have come at even strength.
Nicole Hensley stopped all 30 shots in her season debut in Seattle for her third career shutout. She has four wins in five starts and has not lost in regulation. Her .954 save percentage is the best among goaltenders with multiple starts and an improvement on her .910 average in her first two seasons.
This will be the first game for Frost forwards Klára Hymlárová and Denisa Křížová since being named to Czechia’s Olympic roster for the second time on Tuesday. The country’s eight PWHL players are the most among international countries. Torrent defender Aneta Tejralová is part of that group and returns to the lineup following a two-game suspension.
Kaitlyn O'Donohoe will make her season debut today after being activated from the Frost’s Reserve Player List on Thursday with Dominique Petrie on LTIR. She suited up for eight games last season with Minnesota.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“We saw Minnesota early in the year and didn’t get the result we wanted in front of our fans. Now, eight games later, this is a chance to measure how far we’ve come. Our group keeps growing—there’s real connection forming, real support for one another, and that’s showing up both on the ice and away from it.” – Torrent Head Coach Steve O’Rourke
“We're excited to be back home in front of our fans. This week has been about working on some of the areas we need to clean up and us reinforcing things that we are doing well. We're ready to be back on our home ice and continuing to build on our game.” – Frost Head Coach Ken Klee
SUNDAY’S GAME: Minnesota welcomes Seattle for the very first time in one of two games between the teams this season at Grand Casino Arena. Today’s game is the Frost’s Indigenous Peoples Celebration, part of the PWHL Unity Game series, in partnership with local Indigenous artists, organizations, and community leaders to honor Indigenous culture, recognize lived histories, and create meaningful opportunities for learning, reflection, and community connection. A pre-anthem flag and drum ceremony will be led by local tribal leaders, preformed in their native language(s), recognizing the land, culture, and community histories of the region. The Woody Creek Veteran Spotlight will be dedicated to honoring Lydia Conito and her son, Michael Watterson, who are proud Navy Veterans of the Lower Sioux Indian Community. Both currently serve on the Lower Sioux Veterans Color Guard. Throughout the game, All My Relations Arts, a local Native-led contemporary art gallery spotlighting Indigenous artists and creative storytelling through visual art, will be present on the concourse to increase Indigenous visibility, support artistic sustainability, and foster meaningful dialogue between artists and the broader community.
