WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
This is Vancouver’s first-ever trip to the province of Québec and the third of five Takeover Tour games for the Goldeneyes after they lost 2-1 in overtime against Minnesota in Edmonton on Dec. 27 before beating Boston 4-3 in Detroit on Jan. 3. They will face Seattle in Denver on Jan. 25 before returning to Edmonton to face the Fleet on Apr. 7.
This will be the second of five Takeover Tour games for Montréal this season after topping Toronto 2-1 in a shootout in Halifax in the first game of the Takeover Tour on Dec. 17. Last season, the Victoire played all four of their Takeover Tour games during a five-game span in January, concluding in Québec City on Jan. 19, 2025, with a 2-1 win over Ottawa.
Last season at Centre Vidéotron, Kati Tabin scored the winning goal and had an assist, Catherine Dubois scored in front of her hometown crowd, and Erin Ambrose had two assists. Ann-Renée Desbiens made 26 saves in the win. Five Goldeneyes also played in the game, including former Victoire forwards Jenn Gardiner and Abby Boreen, who assisted on the winning goal. Emerance Maschmeyer made 33 saves for Ottawa, with Ashton Bell and Tereza Vanišová also in the Charge lineup.
Gardiner and Boreen will face their former team for the first time in Québec after finishing third and fourth with 18 and 14 points, respectively, for Montréal last season.
There are no Francophone players or coaches on Vancouver, however the Goldeneyes recently announced the hiring of Charline Labonté as a Player Development Consultant. The Boisbriand native is a four-time Olympic gold medalist and 2017 Clarkson Cup champion with Les Canadiennes.
Katie Chan played in Québec City at the 2017 National Women's U18 Championship where she was the youngest player in the tournament, winning bronze with Team BC. Brooke McQuigge and Sophie Jaques also played in this tournament, winning gold with Ontario Red, while Darcie Lappan won a silver medal with the Ontario Blue team. Victoire forward Dara Greig competed for Alberta.
Montréal won the only game between these teams, a 4-2 decision in Vancouver on Dec. 20. The Victoire are 3-2-0-1 in games played in Canada this season (outscoring opponents 17-8) and 0-0-0-3 in games played in the United States (outscored 8-4). Seven of the league’s nine players from Québec are on the Victoire roster.
Marie-Philip Poulin, from nearby Beauceville, headlines Canada’s 2026 Olympic roster for her fifth Winter Games (three gold, one silver). The captain is one of 10 players from these two teams on the Canadian squad, joining Desbiens, Laura Stacey and Sarah Nurse who will all play in their third Olympics, Ambrose, Maschmeyer and Claire Thompson who will compete in their second, and Gardiner, Jaques and Tabin who will make their Olympic debuts in Italy.
This is the Victoire’s first game since rookie Natálie Mlýnková was named to Czechia’s Olympic roster (joining Vanišová from Vancouver) and Sandra Abstreiter was named to Germany’s roster (with Vancouver’s Nina Jobst-Smith).
Poulin (5G, 3A) and Abby Roque (3G, 4A) both enter today’s game riding career-high five-game point streaks. Heading into Sunday, the longest point streaks in the PWHL this season stand at six games (Mae Batherson and Kendall Cooper). Poulin and Jaques both have goals in consecutive games.
Following the Victoire's open practice at Centre Vidéotron on Saturday in front of hundreds of fans, close to 50 young girls from Québec City area hockey teams (Husky, Citadelles and As) took part in a hockey clinic with Victoire coaches Kori Cheverie, Caroline Ouellette, Noémie Marin and Alex-André Perron, along with players Amanda Boulier, Alexandra Labelle and Jade Downie-Landry.
Desbiens can add ‘ticket manager’ to her résumé, as the Clermont native will have over 120 guests in attendance.
Prior to the 2018 Olympics, Centre Vidéotron hosted an exhibition game between the U.S. (5) and Canada (2) on Oct. 22, 2017. Ambrose, Desbiens and Poulin all played.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“Fans in Montréal and Québec are known to be some of the loudest in hockey. It's going to be an incredible atmosphere in this building. In those moments you kind of think about how everybody is in the building cheering for women's hockey, even if they're not for your team, just for women's hockey in general. Obviously when you hear Marie-Philip Poulin's name called you know it's going to be pretty electric in there. We're just trying to focus on ourselves and make it our own home game if we can.” – Goldeneyes forward Jenn Gardiner
“It's pretty special to come to Québec City. You look at all the fans in the stands for an open practice, it's pretty special. Victoire fans, wherever they are, they show up and they show up loud. And I'm excited for this group to be able to play in front of these fans, excited for Catherine (Dubois), Ann-Renée (Desbiens) and Marie-Philip (Poulin) to have their big moment here. I think about Catherine last year and her goal, it's something we all remember. So really, just hoping that we can kind of show up for them and get a good win.” – Victoire alternate captain Erin Ambrose
SUNDAY’S GAME: The PWHL returns to Québec City for the DoorDash PWHL Takeover Tour between Montréal and Vancouver, two of the league’s four Canadian teams. This is the eighth Takeover Tour game of the season, marking the halfway point of the league’s 16-game Takeover Tour schedule. Québec City is one of four returning Takeover Tour markets along with Denver, Detroit and Edmonton. Centre Vidéotron is one of 30 venues to host the PWHL all-time, with last season’s game played before a sold-out crowd of 18,259, which ranks fifth in all-time PWHL single game attendance. The PWHL has partnered with local nonprofits including Le Diplôme avant la Médaille, Le Pignon Bleu, Centre de pédiatrie sociale de Québec, and Patro Laval for today’s game to promote gender equity and empower the next generation of female leaders by offering access to live women's sports experiences. Fans in attendance can enjoy a number of partnership activations on the concourse and a chance to win prizes from the Econofitness challenge and Poulet Rouge’s spin-to-win. Mascots from Poulet Rouge, Canada Games and the Québec Remparts will join three fans on the ice for a race during the second intermission, where fans can win a $100 gift card from Poulet Rouge. Following the game, AERO will provide exit samples to fans, while supplies last. This is the second time in PWHL history that two Takeover Tour games will occur on the same day, with Ottawa and Boston playing earlier this afternoon in Halifax.
