WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Montréal has won both of its meetings with Vancouver, a 4-2 road win in December and a 1-0 win in Québec City in January. The Goldeneyes and Victoire had the same amount of shots on goal (26 each) in the Takeover Tour clash while Montréal had one more SOG in the December meeting (30-29).
Vancouver scored a 3-2 win at Toronto on Sunday, their first win at an opposing team’s primary home venue. The Goldeneyes have won all seven of their games when scoring three or more goals (six regulation, one in overtime), compared to a record of 1-0-4-11 when held under three goals.
Emerance Maschmeyer made 25 saves on Sunday in just her second game post-Olympics and earned her 20th career win. Of those 20 wins, only one has come against Montréal in 10 starts (Place Bell on Mar. 10, 2024, with Ottawa). She has two or more career wins against every other team in the league, except for the Charge (one loss in one start).
Izzy Daniel notched both a goal and assist in the win over her former team, Toronto, on Sunday. It was her third game this season with at least one goal and one assist. Jenn Gardiner (two) is the only other Goldeneye with multiple such games.
Sarah Nurse had two assists against her former team to hit 10 points (5G, 5A) in 12 games. Montréal is the only team she hasn’t played this season but previously found the scoresheet in six of nine meetings against them with Toronto (3G, 4A). Following Sunday’s game, she made the trip home to Hamilton to present ‘Best Group’ at the JUNO Awards with Renata Fast.
Gardiner recorded 12 of her 18 rookie points at Place Bell as a member of the Victoire, including four of her five goals. She and teammate Abby Boreen were selected by Montréal in the second and third rounds of the 2024 draft and both scored in their Victoire debuts at Place Bell on Nov. 30, 2024.
Michelle Karvinen went hat shopping Monday at Henri Henri, the oldest and biggest hat store in Canada. Between 1940 and 1970 the store famously rewarded NHL players who scored a hat trick at the Montréal Forum with a free hat.
The Victoire can become the second team to clinch a playoff berth tonight. They can do so with a regulation win, or else with an overtime/shootout win if the Sirens do not beat the Frost in regulation in their game tonight in New York.
Montréal’s point streak sits at 11 games following a 3-1 win against the Sirens. It is tied for the longest point streak in PWHL history (Toronto, Jan. 26 – Mar. 20, 2024) and is tied for the longest single-season point streak by a Montréal PWHL/NHL team this century (Canadiens’ 11 straight in 2012-13).
Catherine Dubois has scored all four of her goals on the season over the last four games, including two third-period goals on Saturday against New York. It was the first time Dubois had ever scored multiple goals in a single PWHL game, let alone period.
Laura Stacey scored her sixth goal of the season on Saturday in Detroit. The Victoire alternate captain has points in each of her last four games at Place Bell (3G, 3A) and has recorded 11 of her 16 points this season at the primary home venue (4G, 7A). She leads the PWHL with 98 shots on goal, with Vancouver’s Sophie Jaques in second with 85 shots.
Ann-Renée Desbiens earned one of her five shutouts this season with 26 saves when these teams met on Jan. 11. She’s one win away from becoming the first goaltender with two 15-win seasons in their PWHL career.
Nicole Gosling and Kati Tabin are tied for the Victoire lead in scoring among defenders, both with two goals and nine assists in 23 games. The rookie Gosling scored her first career PWHL goal against the Goldeneyes in Québec City, and the veteran Tabin has assists in consecutive games for the first time this season and secured her first career multi-assist effort in Montréal’s last home game on Mar. 19 against Seattle.
Montréal has outscored its opponents by 24 goals this season (57-33, excluding shootout goals). It would be the largest goal differential in a single season in PWHL history.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
"It's a privilege to get to be in this building as a professional women's hockey player in Montréal. It's the loudest building outside of the [Pacific] Coliseum. We're pretty excited. It's going to be a huge opportunity. We're at a really important part of our season right now with a lot of big points on the line." – Goldeneyes forward Jenn Gardiner
"We try to focus on just small things, small tasks. We're happy that we're getting back in front of our crowd and having a nice advantage again. Really, it's just about starting the game well. We talked about how over the past five days, it's been up and down with our start. So that's going to be a big focus for us. We need to get ready to start playing as soon as the game starts.” – Victoire Head Coach Kori Cheverie
WEDNESDAY’S GAME: Montréal welcomes Vancouver to Place Bell for the first time in PWHL history in the first of three April home games to finish the regular-season schedule. No April Fool’s Day joke, the Victoire hosted the first-ever PWHL game played on this date last season, losing 1-0 to New York. The first 6,000 fans through the doors tonight will receive an exclusive Barbie™ x Montréal Victoire Belt Bag, while quantities last. The Victoire are proud to welcome the Université de Montréal Carabins women's hockey team to tonight’s game for a special on-ice tribute after recently capturing their third U SPORTS National Championship with a victory over the Concordia Stingers. Members of the NSL’s Montréal Roses will also be in attendance and will meet fans and sign autographs prior to the game and during intermissions. As part of the PWHL’s ongoing community engagement, young athletes from the PWHL Mentorship Program, developed in partnership with Strong Girls United and made possible with support from Kyndryl, Founding Partner of the program, will be in attendance for a shared live-game experience paired with meaningful mentorship. The experience is designed to celebrate mentorship, foster leadership, and inspire the next generation of women in sport by connecting young girls with role models both on and off the ice. Mentees will participate in a post-game meet-and-greet with their Victoire Athlete Mentors, including Jessica DiGirolamo, Jade Downie-Landry and Hayley Scamurra, offering an opportunity for conversation, relationship-building, and exposure to career pathways both within and beyond sports. Rodger Brulotte, the late legendary announcer and longtime Montréal Expos colour commentator and reporter, will be honoured in-game. He was a passionate sports fan and strong supporter of women’s hockey, regularly attending Victoire games, sometimes to report, and other times simply as a fan enjoying the game in the crowd. He sadly passed away on March 20 at the age of 79. Alyssa Daunais will perform the Canadian national anthem.
