WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Vancouver beat Seattle, 4-3, in the first-ever game between the league’s West Coast expansion teams on Friday. The only other PWHL teams to get their first-ever win in overtime are Montréal (first game at Ottawa) and Boston (second game at Montréal).
Abby Boreen scored the overtime winner for Vancouver on Friday. She scored just one game-winning goal (OT or otherwise) in her 39 PWHL games over the previous two seasons (OT goal for Minnesota at New York on Jan. 28, 2024).
Claire Thompson had a goal and an assist on Friday. She had two games last season with at least one goal and one assist – the only other defender with multiple such games last season was teammate Sophie Jaques (four).
Emerance Maschmeyer made 24 saves to earn Vancouver’s first-ever win and returns to Ottawa where she was one of the team’s first three foundational signings. She became the first PWHL goaltender to record 1,000 career regular season saves in her last appearance with the Charge on Mar. 11, moments before suffering a season ending injury.
Ashton Bell, the newly appointed captain of the Goldeneyes and first pick in the Expansion Draft, will also face her former teammates tonight in Ottawa. The defender posted 13 points in 51 career games with the Charge and shared a house with fellow UMD alumnae Gabbie Hughes and Mannon McMahon in the nation’s capital after serving as captain for the Bulldogs.
Tereza Vanišová signed with Vancouver in the offseason after leading the Charge with 15 goals and 22 points in 30 games and was the first player to record two hat tricks in a season.
The Charge lost their season opener, 4-0, to New York at home on Saturday. They had only been shut out in four total games over their first two seasons, including two on home ice in 2024-25. Their only worse shutout defeat was a 5-0 loss at Minnesota on Mar. 7, 2025.
Ottawa has scored 66 goals in 26 regular season games at TD Place, the most scored by any team at a primary home venue. They are one of two teams to score eight goals in a single game and the only team to achieve the feat on home ice (Feb. 13 vs. Minnesota). The Frost scored eight in Boston on May 3, 2025.
Emily Clark led the Charge with five shots on goal on Saturday, one shy of her career high. Including postseason, Clark has 13 career games with at least five shots on goal, and the Charge are 3-1-3-6 in those games.
Rory Guilday and Brooke Hobson made immediate impacts in their Charge debuts on the blue line, delivering four hits each in a physical battle against New York. Guilday, the team’s fifth overall pick, was second on the team in time on ice (25:40) in a top pairing with Jocelyne Larocque.
Anna Shokhina, Ottawa’s second-round pick in June, is expected to make her PWHL debut tonight. Joined by sixth-round pick Fanuza Kadirova, the pair are the first two players from Russia in PWHL history and played together the last two seasons with Dynamo-Neva St. Petersburg (ZhHL).
Tonight is Ottawa’s 23rd regular season game against a Canadian opponent and enter the action with an overall record of 8-1-4-9, and a 5-0-2-4 record at home.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“Our expectations are the same every time we step on the ice. We want to give a full effort. We want to compete. Any time we do that we feel like our skill gives us a chance. A lot of emotions, a lot of memories, a lot of friends and people in the community they (former Ottawa players) are still connected with. It's hard. We want to get them into the game and hopefully in that first five minutes that kind of fades into the background and they just play hockey.” – Goldeneyes Head Coach Brian Idalski
“Welcoming back Emerance Maschmeyer, Ashton Bell and Tereza Vanišová will be something special and emotional. There was so much movement in the league, but last year, our team was such a tight-knit group. We will see some of our best friends in different colours this year in our home building. It’s going to be emotional, but exciting to see them. I can’t wait for the fans to cheer for them when they get their welcome back video.” – Ottawa forward Gabbie Hughes
WEDNESDAY’S GAME: The PWHL’s newest Canadian team will fly their colours into Ottawa for the first time as the Charge welcome the Vancouver Goldeneyes to TD Place. Fans will have the opportunity to acknowledge former Charge players Emerance Maschmeyer, Ashton Bell and Tereza Vanišová and re-live some of their most memorable moments in the nation’s capital during a special tribute video during the first period. The first 6,000 fans in attendance will receive Charge Kazoos, which first became an organically popular part of the game day atmosphere at TD Place. Season Ticket Members will be gifted their new toques tonight, and, while supplies last, Magnet Schedules will be handed out to fans as an exit giveaway. The popular Canadian Tire poster station returns behind Section 25 while the team shop remains open at Gate 3. The National Anthem will be performed by Allegra Nocita.
