WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The defending Walter Cup champion Frost knocked the Sceptres out of last season’s playoffs, winning the last three games to overcome a 2-0 Toronto lead in the five-game series. Including the postseason, five of the all-time meetings have gone to overtime, the most for Toronto against any opponent and tied for Minnesota’s most (also against New York).

Minnesota ended the regular season with an 8-1 road win at Boston, the largest margin of victory in league history, and the eight goals were two more than any other team had ever scored on the road. The Frost were outshot 30-27 by the Fleet, the first time a PWHL team had won by more than four goals while having fewer SOG.

Four PWHL players have registered five or more career points in the playoffs and all four play for Minnesota – 2024 Playoff MVP Taylor Heise (8), Michela Cava (8), Sophie Jaques (5) and Liz Schepers (5) are among the Frost’s 16 returning members from the Walter Cup winning team.

Cava is no stranger to winning in Toronto, having been named PHF Playoff MVP for the Isobel Cup Champion Toronto Six in 2023. The Thunder Bay native has won four straight professional titles from the SDHL (Luleå), ZhHL (KRS Vanke Rays), to the PHF and PWHL.

Claire Thompson will make her playoff debut in her hometown and is one of seven players on the Frost active roster without experience in the PWHL Playoffs. Jaques is the Frost’s other Torontonian and played with Thompson’s younger sister Gillian during her youth hockey career and was coached by Thompson’s Father (Ian).

Minnesota scored at least three goals in each of its last four road games in last season’s playoffs, culminating in a 3-0 Walter Cup-winning victory over Boston. No other PWHL team has scored more than two goals in a road playoff game even once.

Toronto debuted at Coca-Cola Coliseum during the 2024 PWHL Playoffs with two straight shutout wins over Minnesota (4-0, 2-0) before falling 4-1 in Game 5. This season, the Sceptres won eight of their 13 games in their primary home venue, but lost twice to the Frost.

Including the playoffs, Toronto has 27 all-time regulation wins (four more than any other team) and 34 wins including OT/SO (one more than next-most). Toronto’s all-time goals per game average of 2.47 is the highest in league history while its 2.17 goals allowed per game is the lowest.

Kristen Campbell, who surpassed 1,000 career regular season saves on Saturday, led the 2024 PWHL Playoffs with a 0.93 GAA and a .962 SV%.

Blayre Turnbull led Toronto with two goals during the 2024 PWHL Playoffs, with Hannah Miller and Renata Fast tied for the team lead with three points in five games. They are among 11 returnees on the active roster who competed in last season’s playoffs.

Daryl Watts will make her playoff debut in her hometown and joins Savannah Harmon, Hayley Scamurra and Emma Woods as PWHL veterans experiencing their first postseason.

Fast finished the regular season with 16 assists, tying her for the league lead with Sarah Fillier. Fast also finished in the top five league-wide for most hits (63, first), power play assists (11, first), blocked shots (49, tied for third) and penalty minutes (36, second).

Allie Munroe was named an alternate captain for the Sceptres prior to Saturday’s regular season finale. She’s one of only seven Sceptres to be in the lineup for every game in team history.

Special Walter Cup crests have been added to all team jerseys for the duration of the PWHL Playoffs.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“We ended the regular season playing good hockey and need that to continue against a good team in the playoffs. This is an exciting time of year for players, coaches and fans and I’m looking forward to getting it started tonight!” - Frost Head Coach Ken Klee.

There’s definitely an extra layer of focus in the post season but also lots of excitement heading into the series with home ice. I’m looking forward to tonight; we have a special group, and I just want to do everything I can to help this team win. I love playoff hockey!” - Sceptres forward Emma Woods.
