WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Charge scored a 3-2 overtime win against Minnesota in the Takeover Tour game in Chicago on Sunday. Ottawa went 1-10 in its first 11 regular-season games that went beyond regulation but has now won three in a row dating back to last season, including a 2-1 OT win in the season finale in Toronto on May 3.

Sarah Wozniewicz’s overtime winner on Sunday was her first career PWHL goal. The Charge third-round pick is the eighth player whose first career PWHL goal came in overtime (including postseason), but the first for Ottawa and the first since the inaugural season.

Good karma happens when players are active in the community. In Chicago, Wozniewicz, defender Ronja Savolainen and rookie Peyton Hemp were together for an on-ice clinic with the Chicago U10 Chargers and U12 Mission. Savolainen and Wozniewicz went on to score their first goals of the season, while Hemp assisted on the OT winner.

Brianne Jenner scored her third goal of the season Sunday in Chicago and marked the first time this season the Charge have scored two power play goals in a game. Her six points have contributed to half of Ottawa’s 12 goals, while the team improves to 15-1 in regular season games when she scores.

Gwyneth Philips is the first PWHL goaltender to face 200 shots this season, 35 more than the next closest netminder (New York’s Kayle Osborne, 165 in one more game). Her 41 saves on Sunday were a career-high and the highest total in the PWHL this season. Her words while waiting to salute the fans after earning the game’s second star: “I’m exhausted!”

Rory Guilday (2A) and Rebecca Leslie (1G, 1A) enter Tuesday with two-game point streaks. Guilday (1G, 4A) leads all rookies in scoring and Leslie (2G, 3A) is more than halfway to exceeding her inaugural season point total with Toronto.

Alexa Vasko, who also played the inaugural season with Toronto, reunited with some distant family members in Chicago who also have hockey in their roots. Her late Great Uncle, Elmer Vasko, played for the Chicago Blackhawks and won the Stanley Cup in 1961.

The Sceptres came away with a 3-1 win when these teams met in Toronto on Dec. 4. The game was the last time the Sceptres played at Coca-Cola Coliseum and also started Ottawa’s first and longest road trip of the season (five games). The Charge are 4-0-0-0 all-time against the Sceptres when scoring at least three goals, and 1-1-1-5 when scoring two or fewer.

Toronto topped New York, 4-3, in Newark on Sunday. It snapped a streak of 18 games without a win when allowing three or more goals (0-0-4-14). Their last win in such a game came on Feb. 27, 2024, a 4-3 overtime win in Minnesota.

Jesse Compher had two goals and an assist on Sunday, her first career multi-goal game and first career three-point game which earned her PWHL Player of the Week honours. It was the third two-goal, one-assist game by a Sceptre all-time – Blayre Turnbull did it on Feb. 1, 2025 against the Charge, and Hannah Miller did it on Feb. 19, 2025 against the Sirens.

Turnbull, who has scored in both games this season at Coca-Cola Coliseum, tallied her team-leading third goal on Sunday. The Sceptres captain had five goals in 30 games in the 2024-25 regular season and has matched that total in 10 games since then (four playoff games and six games this season).

Daryl Watts recorded her first and only multi-point performance of the season last time the Sceptres played the Charge (1G, 1A). Last season, she tied for the PWHL lead with eight multi-point games and finished the year as Toronto’s leading scorer with 27 points (12G, 15A) in 30 games.

Natalie Spooner, who scored the winning goal against the Charge on Dec. 4, leads Toronto with 20 shots on goal which is tied for tenth in the PWHL. Three Ottawa players have equal or more shots including Leslie (20), Jenner (24) and Emily Clark (27). Clark is one of two players (New York’s Anne Cherkowski, 21) with 20 or more shots without scoring a goal.

Toronto is one of four PWHL teams (Minnesota, Seattle, Vancouver) to have two goaltenders with multiple starts. Of those teams, the Sceptres are the only team with both goaltenders in the top 10 in goals-against-average and save percentage: Raygan Kirk, 1.75 GAA and .932 SV%; Elaine Chuli, 2.00 GAA and .930 SV%.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“I don’t think our team has been off-track all season. That’s the joy of this league. It’s highly competitive. It’s kind of a five hundred-ish league. I like how we’ve been playing. We always want to get better. We’re working on things. I don’t think our record is a complete reflection of our game. There’s lots of positive things within our game. We’ve just got to continue to grow” – Charge Head Coach Carla MacLeod

“I expect a fast paced, and highly intense matchup where two teams are looking to take home three crucial points before a few days off. Getting three points at any point is important in this league but especially these last few games before the new year and against a team like Ottawa which always calls for a very strong and entertaining battle. We know they have strong goaltending and play very hard. Focusing on trying to come out swinging from the start and maintaining that for 60 minutes will be super important. It’s been a long time since playing at home and I think we’re all ready to be back at home with our fans and the energy that Coca-Cola Coliseum brings every game. These are a huge three points so being at home is the environment we want.” – Sceptres rookie Kiara Zanon

TUESDAY’S GAME: It’s the second meeting of the month in the PWHL’s Battle of Ontario with tonight’s game presented by Air Canada. Toronto and Ottawa will face each other a total of five times this season, including once more at Coca-Cola Coliseum in April. The Sceptres are excited to welcome players from Canada’s National Women’s Rugby Team, silver medalists at the Rugby World Cup. Fans can watch out for some fun Olympic trivia in partnership with the Hockey Hall of Fame, a t-shirt toss and more fun games courtesy of Air Canada, plus the popular ‘My Team My Sign’ promotion with partner Canadian Tire. The Sceptres are also welcoming groups from the Brantford Ice Cats, Collingwood Lightning, Etobicoke Dolphins, New Tecumseth IceKats, and North Halton Twisters in the team’s final game before a short holiday break.
