Alina Müller has done it again.
After scoring the game-winning goal in the bronze medal match at the Sochi 2014 Games against this same Swedish side, the Boston Fleet forward delivered once more at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games — this time netting the decisive overtime winner to secure bronze for Switzerland.
It was a tightly contested matchup throughout. Each team scored in the second period, but as the game wound down in the third, neither side could find the go-ahead goal. Switzerland had to survive a late Swedish power play to force the 10-minute 3-on-3 overtime.
It took nearly the entire extra frame, but in the final minute, Müller — who has been immense for the Swiss all tournament — lifted the puck over the shoulder of Swedish netminder Ebba Träff Svensson to seal the victory.
With the goal, Müller now sits fourth all-time in Olympic women’s hockey goal scoring, recording her 16th career tally at the Winter Games.
The result is heartbreak for Sweden, which entered the medal round after winning Group B and carried one of the tournament’s most potent offenses. However, the Swedes were unable to solve Swiss goaltender Andrea Brändli late in the game, who delivered another remarkable performance on the Olympic stage.
For Switzerland, the bronze medal marks their first Olympic ice hockey medal in 12 years, their previous podium finish also coming in Sochi.
The gold medal game between Canada and the United States will be played later today at 1:10 PM ET.
