Canada outlasted a resilient Swiss side to book their place in the gold medal game and a highly anticipated rematch with the United States. Unlike the Canadian's 4–0 victory over Switzerland in the preliminary round, this semifinal proved to be a much tighter contest.
Both teams were held scoreless through the opening period, but it was captain Marie-Philip Poulin who broke the deadlock in the second, scoring twice to give Canada control.
With those goals, Poulin became the all-time leading goal scorer in Olympic Winter Games history, recording her 19th and 20th career Olympic goals in her fifth Games appearance.
Swiss goaltender Andrea Brändli, who has enjoyed a strong tournament, kept her team within reach despite facing 46 shots. Rahel Enzler pulled one back for Switzerland with an assist from Boston Fleet forward Alina Müller, but the Swiss were unable to complete the comeback as Canada advance to face the Americans, who secured their spot in the final earlier in the day.
Switzerland will play Sweden for the bronze medal Thursday at 8:10 AM ET. Canada and the United States will meet for gold at 1:10 PM ET, marking the seventh time the two rivals have faced off in an Olympic final. Canada will look to avenge the 5–0 loss they suffered to the Americans in the preliminary round.
