WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

New York beat Minnesota, 4-3 in overtime in their season opener on Sunday. New York’s five OT/SO wins since the start of last season are the most in the league. Four of those five wins have come on the road.

Alex Carpenter’s second goal of the game on Sunday was scored 19 seconds into overtime, the second-fastest OT goal in league history. Sarah Nurse scored 13 seconds into OT for Toronto against Montréal on Apr. 20 at the Bell Centre. It was Carpenter’s third OT goal with New York (Feb. 4, Feb. 17).

First overall pick Sarah Fillier led all PWHL rookies in opening weekend scoring with 2A.

Jessie Eldridge recorded 4 of her 7G in five games against Montréal last season including 2PPG on Mar. 6. She scored on the power play in Sunday’s season opener.

It’s a homecoming for Quebec native Emmy Fecteau (Saint-Odilon-De-Cranbourn). The Sirens selected the two-time U SPORTS national champion from the Concordia Stingers in the sixth round and signed her to a three-year deal.

Élizabeth Giguère (Quebec City) and Jade Downie-Landry (St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu) return to play in their home province.

Montréal beat Ottawa, 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday, their first-ever SO win (MTL went 3-2 in OT games last season, and 0-3 in the SO). MTL was 8-1-1-0 last season when scoring at least three goals and 2-2-4-6 when scoring two or fewer.

Abby Boreen had a goal, an assist and a holding penalty in Saturday’s win. It was her first game with a goal, assist and penalty since Dec. 10, 2022, when she was a member of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in a 9-0 win over St. Cloud State.

Montréal won four of five meetings against New York last season, including both games at home. The team scored 19 total goals against the Sirens, its most against any opponent.

Buffalo native Maureen Murphy has recorded points in all five games against her home state team totaling 1G, 6A including a career-high two multi-assist games.

Marie-Philip Poulin had 5G in her 5GP vs New York last season, including a hat trick in their first meeting on Jan. 10. The captain scored a combined 5G in her 16 other games against the other four PWHL teams last season.

Victoire forward Alexandra Labelle faces her former team for the first time. She had 1G, 2A in 24 GP with New York.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“We’re thrilled to head to Montréal, especially with it being a homecoming for several of our players—a moment that will no doubt add some energy to the night. Coming off a hard-fought overtime win in Minnesota, it was encouraging to see our team dig deep and find a way to get the job done. We know we have another level to reach, and we’re focused on sharpening the details in our game.”  – Sirens Head Coach Greg Fargo.

“We are getting ready to face a deadly duo in Sarah Fillier and Alex Carpenter. Fillier is having an impact right away. I know her well for having coached her since 2020, and Carpenter is one of the best to ever play the game, and they are now both together. We will work on eliminating mistakes and how we can shut them down.” - Victoire Head Coach Kori Cheverie.

WEDNESDAY’S GAME: The Montréal Victoire return to Place Bell only four days following their electrifying shootout win on opening night, in front of a pumped-up crowd of 10,033 fans on Saturday. This game will be part of the Unity themed games for this season and will be Mental Health Awareness Night, in support of the Fondation Jeunes en Tête, whose mission is to prevent psychological distress amongst Québec youth aged between 11 and 18 thanks to its sensitivity programs. The Fondation will take advantage of this opportunity to put forward its mission and accomplishments. During the first intermission, the Westlake girls’ hockey team will face off during a mini match in front of Victoire supporters. DJ Shortcut will be on duty and get Place Bell hyped up in La Belle Province, while Samantha Neeves will sing both National anthems.
