NEWARK, NJ (April 1, 2026) – Sarah Fillier scored the overtime game-winning goal to cap off a hat trick, firing a shot around a defender to lift the New York Sirens to a 4-3 comeback triumph over the Minnesota Frost Wednesday night at Prudential Center. Taylor Heise wasted no time getting the Frost on the board, burying a net front goal off a slick skate-to-stick move just 16 seconds into the first period. Five minutes later, rookie Maddi Wheeler responded for the Sirens, knotting the score at 1-1 with a top shelf finish from one knee. Grace Zumwinkle gave Minnesota their best chance with a pair of goals, scoring a backhanded beauty at 4:07 of the second period before striking again 44 seconds into the third period to give the Frost a 3-1 lead early in the final frame. Fillier’s first career hat trick began with a momentum-shifting goal at 12:20 of the third period, when she exited the penalty box, snagged the puck, and skated in on a breakaway, using a forehand-backhand fake to pull the Sirens within one at 3-2. Just 14 seconds later, Fillier buried a rebound from a blocked shot to tie the game at three apiece, setting the stage for her overtime winner. Rookie Callie Shanahan turned away 22 of 25 shots for her first career victory, while Maddie Rooney took the loss with a 25-save performance.
The Frost will look to bounce back in a home matchup with Vancouver Saturday afternoon, while the Sirens will host Seattle in their first-ever Madison Square Garden game that night. New York and Minnesota will meet again on April 11 at Grand Casino Arena to close out the season series, which the Frost lead 9-3 in points.
QUOTES
New York Head Coach Greg Fargo on the full Sirens lineup playing a full 60 minutes: “Sarah [Fillier] put us on her back in the third period. She built momentum coming out of the box, picked off a pass, and made a great play on the breakaway. We were able to ride the energy that she and her line brought. It wasn’t just one player—Filly [Fillier] had a great game — but we saw solid efforts up and down the lineup, with everyone doing things the right way for a good stretch of the game.”
Sirens forward Denisa Křížová on joining the team: “It's been a lot over the last 48 hours, so it wasn’t easy moving across the country. But I had a really warm welcome here — everything was set up well, and the team has been great, so it’s a good start. I’m really happy we got the win. [New York] is a strong team — I never liked playing against them because they work so hard. I’m happy to be here and just want to keep things going.”
Minnesota Head Coach Ken Klee on the continuous success of the team’s power play: “I think our puck movement’s pretty good. I think our players are reading off each other, trying to make easy plays, and finishing on our chances. I would’ve liked our power play to have been a little more killer at the end to try to get us the extra goal that we needed to win, but that’s how games go. They’re playing hard too; they had good players like us. I think our power play has to keep building confidence. The goal Grace [Zumwinkle] scored was a great one, three or four passes in a row to be able to allow [Zumwinkle] to put it in the [goal] which is nice.”
Frost forward Grace Zumwinkle on looking ahead to the next game: “I think we know that heading into the last six, seven games of the season that everything matters, and I think we can tighten up a few things defensively and all areas of the ice just being cleaner and sharper.”
NOTABLES
New York snapped a four-game losing streak, winning for the first time since their last game at Prudential Center on Mar. 8, a 6-2 victory over Ottawa.
Minnesota has three consecutive losses for the first time this season (0-0-1-2) and just the third time in team history. The last time the Frost lost three straight was in March 2025 and their longest winless streak in team history was a five-game stretch between April and May during the inaugural season.
New York won its first matchup in four games against the Frost this season, ending Minnesota’s longest win streak in the all-time head-to-head series. The Sirens now have three points in the season series, after taking the Frost to extra time the last time these teams met at the Prudential Center in a 3-2 overtime decision on Jan. 16.
The Sirens picked up their first win in 12 games when trailing after two periods. This was also just the Frost’s second loss, both in overtime, in 13 games when leading after two periods. Minnesota opened scoring for the 16th time in 24 games and lost for the third time when scoring the game’s first goal.
Minnesota, the league’s least penalized team this season, was shorthanded five times today. The Frost special teams unit killed all five penalties, including an extended 5-on-3 opportunity for New York, to improve to 83.0%. Their season-high for penalty minutes is 12, occurring on Mar. 15 against the Sirens.
Sarah Fillier set a PWHL record for the fastest two goals by the same player, doing so in 14 seconds, and became the first player in PWHL history to complete a hat trick with an overtime winner. The trio of goals tonight gave her back-to-back three-point performances at Prudential Center after notching a pair of goals and an assist in New York’s 6-2 win over Ottawa on Mar 8. The second-year Sirens forward has seven goals in her last six games after recording one in 17 games to open the season and is on the cusp of reaching the 20-point plateau in consecutive seasons, sitting at 19 points (8G, 11A) in 23 games.
Fillier is one of three Sirens with a hat trick this season, joining Taylor Girard (Nov. 22) and Casey O’Brien (Dec. 28). The only other hat trick recorded in the PWHL in 2025-26 belongs to Frost captain Kendall Coyne Schofield (Dec. 2).
Maddi Wheeler notched her first goal since scoring New York’s opener in a 6-2 home win on Mar 8. Two of the Sirens rookie’s three markers have come at Prudential Center, both of which opened the scoring for New York. She added her first goal of 2025-26 when New York hosted Seattle during a Dec. 28 Takeover Tour matchup with Seattle at American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Maja Nylén Persson’s first career multi-point performance added her seventh and eighth assists for her first points in four games against Minnesota this season. She has three more points than her rookie output and doubled her 2024-25 assist total in one more game this season.
O’Brien’s multi-assist effort extended her point streak to four and league lead among rookies to 18 points (6G, 12A), 17 of which have been tallied since Dec. 21. She recorded six faceoff wins today to move her season total to 203, breaking Gabbie Hughes’ rookie record of 198 during the inaugural season.
Grace Zumwinkle matched a career-high of 11 goals, equaling her output in 24 games during the inaugural season with her second consecutive multi-goal outing against New York. She became the fifth PWHL player to hit double-digits in goals this season and now sits tied for second in the league in the category. Almost half of her goals (5) and points have now come in four games against New York this season, with her seventh point surpassing Laura Stacey for the most against New York in 2025-26.
Taylor Heise’s goal came just 16 seconds into the game, good for the fastest goal scored in the PWHL this season. Her ninth goal in 24 games in 2025-26 is a new career high, surpassing her eight goals in 29 games last season. The 2023 first overall draft pick is now within one of reaching 60 career points (21G, 38A), a milestone that only two other players have reached in league history.
Callie Shanahan earned her first career win in her second career start and third appearance. The rookie goaltender made a career-high 22 saves in the game, including 12 in the second period. Both of her starts have gone to overtime, following 4-3 OT loss against Ottawa in her PWHL debut on Jan. 20.
Clair DeGeorge recorded her first point of the season in her third game as a Siren with an assist tonight. She signed a PWHL Standard Player Agreement with New York on Mar. 18 after playing 17 games with Toronto to open the season. The Sirens forward now has four points (4A) in 69 career games.
Elle Hartje snapped a four-game pointless streak with an assist that matches her rookie output (6A). Half of her points have been recorded at Prudential Center, including a multi-assist effort on Mar. 8 against Ottawa. The former Yale Bulldog now has 12 points in 50 career games for New York.
Britta Curl-Salemme’s fourth multi-assist effort of the season extended her point streak on the road to three consecutive games, improving her total to five points during that span (1G, 4A). The Frost forward co-leads the league in scoring, with 24 points and is just the third player in team history to reach 15 assists in a single season, joining Heise this season and Sophie Jaques in 2024-25.
Abby Hustler recorded her ninth assist and 12th point in 24 games this season, moving her into a tie for the fifth-most points among league rookies. The Frost forward recorded her first career multi-assist performance when these teams met at Grand Casino Arena on Jan. 25.
Sidney Morin reached 15 career assists with her seventh in 24 games this season. The third-year defender is now one away from matching a career-high eight points (3G, 5A) across 30 games in 2024-25 with Boston.
Lee Stecklein tied her career-high assist mark, reaching six on the year, which she also achieved in each of the last two seasons. She has seven points in 22 games this season, one away from tying her inaugural season output and two from matching her 2024-25 points total. The Minnesota alternate captain, who has points in consecutive games, is just one shy of reaching the quarter-century milestone for her career.
Kelly Pannek’s 12th assist in her 24th game of 2025-26 matched her career-high in as many games during the inaugural season. The March PWHL Starting Six selection has nine points in nine games since returning from the Olympics (4G, 5A) and sits two away from doubling her combined goals total from the league’s first two seasons.
Kristin O’Neill led all skaters with 14 faceoff wins today, surpassing her 234 wins in 2024-25 with a new career-high of 237 in six fewer games this season.
Anne Cherkowski led all skaters today with five shots on goal, one off from her career-high set on Dec. 3 against Seattle.
Maddie Rooney made 25 saves for the eighth time in 14 starts this season, suffering her second consecutive loss after seven straight wins from Jan. 11 to Mar. 21.
Minnesota and New York completed a trade ahead of Monday’s deadline that saw the Frost acquire defender Jincy Roese from the Sirens in exchange for forward Denisa Křížová. Roese, who tallied six assists in 22 games played in New York this season, recorded one shot in 19:24 time on ice. Křížová, who had one goal and four assists in 20 games played in Minnesota, recorded two hits in 10:42 time on ice tonight.
Natalie Buchbinder was scratched from the Frost lineup for a second consecutive game, listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
