As two of our resident Ottawans Sam Cogan and Rebecca Leslie are ready to return home this week, let’s get to know them a little more!

Twenty-six-year-old Cogan, a product of the Nepean Wildcats organization, went on to play at the University of Wisconsin for four seasons and won an NCAA Championship along the way. Ottawa Lady Senators alumna Leslie went on to star at Boston University (alongside a few PWHL Toronto teammates), and, after graduating in 2018, won the final Clarkson Cup (Calgary Inferno, CWHL).

What is the most memorable moment of your hockey career so far?

Cogan: Winning the national championship with Wisconsin my senior year or making the PWHL.

Leslie: Playing for Team Canada. Any time, but I guess the first time being able to play for Team Canada at U18s, that was really cool.

Which teammate would you trust to drive your car?

Cogan: Renata Fast. She’s perfect and seems like someone would drive my car with care.

Leslie: I feel like Jonesy [Jess Jones], she’s an OPP constable. She’d get out of it even if she did something wrong.

What is your favourite restaurant in Toronto? What is your favourite dish there?

Cogan: Gurume Sushi across from Mattamy Athletic Centre. My favourite there is the Beef Teriyaki Bento Box.

Leslie: Sugo. I love the rigatoni, the calamari, the Ceasar salad and all their pizzas!

Who was your favourite coach growing up? What team/age did they coach you for?

Cogan: I had the privilege of being coached by several remarkable mentors growing up, but Steve Foget notably shaped my game during my Atom and Peewee years.

Leslie: My dad. He coached me when I was younger and then again when I was in junior.

What is the best piece of advice you've received (can be life or hockey)?

Cogan: The best advice I've received is from my parents, and it's a quote they used to tell me growing up: 'Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.'

Leslie: I think the best piece of advice I’ve been given is just live in the moment, you never know when it’s going to be your last moment doing something so, just live in the moment, enjoy it and just have fun.
