Second annual draft will take place in June and consist of seven rounds and 42 picks

NEW YORK AND TORONTO (April 27, 2024) – The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has announced that the 2024 PWHL Draft in June will be held in Minnesota, where the league’s six teams will make a total of 42 selections. The announcement was made as part of ‘Fan Appreciation Day’ celebrations during PWHL Minnesota’s final home game of the regular-season this afternoon at Xcel Energy Center.

Fans can register online to receive priority information and offers to attend official PWHL Draft events.

“The PWHL Draft is one of the most significant events on the league’s calendar as we officially turn the page into our second season and introduce the next wave of professional women’s hockey talent,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations. “We know that our passionate fans in Minnesota will give all new players to the league a warm welcome and will help make this a memorable moment for everyone.”

“PWHL Minnesota is thrilled to host the 2024 PWHL Draft in the State of Hockey,” said Natalie Darwitz, PWHL General Manager. “It will be an honor to welcome current players, future players, PWHL representatives, media and fans from around the world to Minnesota for this exciting event.”

A Minnesota-inspired logo has been designed to commemorate the 2024 PWHL Draft. Its centerpiece is a lake illustration that represents the state slogan “Land of 10,000 Lakes” and two stars flanking the word ‘Minnesota’ portray the state’s official motto “L’Etoile du Nord.” The pink color reflects the state flower, showy lady’s slipper, with a nod to a Minnesota summer sunset/dawn over the lake.

The 2024 PWHL Draft will consist of seven rounds. The league’s adaptation of the ‘Gold Plan’ will award the first pick in each round to the team that earns the most ‘Draft Order Points’ in games that follow their elimination from playoff contention. The non-playoff team with the fewest ‘Draft Order Points’ will select second in each round of the draft. Picks three through six will be determined among the four playoff teams, based on the inverse order of the regular-season standings. The draft will utilize a traditional format, in which once a round is completed, the following round will be conducted in the same order as the previous round.

Minnesota made history at the inaugural PWHL Draft on Sept. 18, 2023, in Toronto by selecting forward Taylor Heise with the first overall pick.
