PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE (PWHL) ANNOUNCES TRADE BETWEEN BOSTON AND MINNESOTA

Boston acquires Abby Cook and Susanna Tapani from Minnesota for Sophie Jaques

TORONTO, ON (February 11, 2024) – The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) today announced details of a trade – the first in PWHL history – that has been made between PWHL Boston and PWHL Minnesota. The trade sees Boston acquire defender Abby Cook and forward Susanna Tapani from Minnesota, in exchange for defender Sophie Jaques.

Jaques, a 23-year-old from Toronto, ON, was selected by Boston in the second round, 10th overall, in the inaugural PWHL Draft and was signed to a three-year contract. Jaques played the first seven games of her professional career in Boston after graduating from Ohio State University where she won the 2023 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as a member of the Buckeyes.

Cook, a 25-year-old from Kelowna, BC, signed a one-year deal with Minnesota as a free agent out of training camp and had one goal in nine games so far this season. Cook played four seasons with the Boston University Terriers from 2016-20 and was named to the Women’s Beanpot Hall of Fame as part of the induction class of 2023.

Tapani, a 30-year-old from Turku, Finland, was selected by Minnesota in the fifth round of the PWHL Draft and signed a two-year agreement with the team. She was fifth in Minnesota scoring with five points, including two goals and three assists, in nine games. Tapani represented Finland in three Olympics, winning bronze medals in 2018 and 2022, and has one silver and four bronze across eight IIHF Women’s World Championship appearances.

Any subsequent transactions for teams to remain compliant with league roster specifications and lineups will be made prior to Wednesday’s games.
