NEW YORK, New York (July 11, 2024) – PWHL New York announced today that the team has signed defender Maja Nylén Persson to a three-year contract through the 2026-27 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season.
“I am happy to officially welcome Maja to New York for the next three seasons,” said PWHL New York General Manager Pascal Daoust. “New York fans will surely appreciate her great efficiency playing both without and with the puck. The maturity and calmness of her game will make our defensive unit even better. Having been a captain at a very young age, she will add a lot of leadership with her experience on the international stage, both at World Championships and the Olympics.”
Nylén Persson was selected in the second round, 10th overall by New York in the 2024 PWHL Draft. A native of Avesta, Sweden, Nylén Persson has spent eight years competing in the SDHL and has been voted as the league’s Defender of the Year each of the last three seasons. As Brynäs’ captain in 2023-24, she scored 11 goals and 38 points in 36 games to lead the league in scoring at her position. The two-time Olympian has also represented her country at five IIHF Women’s World Championships and was named as a Top 3 player for Sweden at the most recent tournament in Utica, NY.

Nylén Persson is the first of the team’s 2024 PWHL Draft picks to officially sign with New York. She joins thirteen returnees, including forwards Chloé Aurard, Alex Carpenter, Jade Downie-Landry, Jessie Eldridge, Élizabeth Giguère, Abby Roque and Jill Saulnier; defenders Jaime Bourbonnais, Brooke Hobson, Ella Shelton and Micah Zandee-Hart; and goaltenders Abbey Levy and Corinne Schroeder.
Per the Players Association, salary terms of contracts will not be disclosed.
