Draft to take place at CBC in Toronto on Monday, September 18
TORONTO, ON (September 13, 2023) – The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) will introduce 90 of its founding players as they are selected in the inaugural PWHL Draft presented by Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC). The Draft will take place on Monday, September 18 at CBC’s headquarters in downtown Toronto beginning at 1 p.m. ET and will also be streamed in partnership with CBC Sports. Audiences will be able to watch the full Draft live on the free CBC Gem streaming service, cbcsports.ca, the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, radio-canada.ca/sports, and the Radio-Canada info app. International audiences can stream on CBC Sports’ and Radio-Canada’s YouTube pages.
“The inaugural PWHL Draft is a monumental event in our league’s history and a day the players have been waiting for with great anticipation and excitement,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations. “Our appreciation is extended to our Founding Partner Canadian Tire Corporation for their support, and to CBC/Radio-Canada for helping make this a special experience in the iconic Barbara Frum Atrium, and for our fans tuning in live.”
The first four rounds of the draft’s livestream will be hosted by CBC Sports’ Andi Petrillo, with analysis from Hailey Salvian and Shannon Szabados, and player interviews conducted stage-side by CBC Sports’ Anastasia Bucsis.
Fans are invited to greet the players and VIPs who will be walking the PWHL purple carpet prior to the start of the Draft from approximately 12 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. ET. To participate, fans are encouraged to check in with event staff at the CBC entrance (250 Front Street West, Toronto) at or before 12 p.m. ET on Sept. 18. Please note that capacity is limited, and access to the draft event itself will be for credentialled personnel only.
The order of selection for the first round of the PWHL Draft was determined by a draft lottery. Subsequent rounds will follow a snake format, in which, once a round is completed, the following round will be conducted with the teams selecting in the reverse order. The draft will consist of 15 rounds. Minnesota holds the first overall pick in the Draft, and the full order of selection can be found by clicking here. Live picks can be followed on a results page published at thepwhl.com.
