LOWELL, MA (February 17, 2024) – Alex Carpenter scored her sixth goal of the season at 2:28 of overtime to lift New York to a 2-1 victory over Boston on Saturday.
This is the second game in row that Carpenter has scored the overtime winner for New York—her previous winner lifted her team to a 4-3 victory in Ottawa on February 4.
The goal was scored after Emma Woods thwarted Boston’s clearing attempt allowing teammate Jaime Bourbonnais to collect the puck at the top of the left circle. She then skated across to the right side of the ice before feeding the puck to Carpenter back on the left side who wired a wrist shot over Boston goaltender Aerin Frankel’s left shoulder to seal the 2-1 victory.
With the goal, Carpenter moves into sole possession of first place in league scoring with 12 points. She entered the game tied with Toronto’s Natalie Spooner.
Boston had sent the game to overtime after scoring the tying goal with just over a minute remaining in the third period, having trailed the game since the first frame.
Defender Megan Keller provided the tying marker at 18:56 of the third, her third goal of the season. The goal was scored with Frankel on the bench to give Boston a 6-on-5 advantage.
Keller prevented New York’s clearing attempt before crossing the high slot to the left side where she released a wrist shot which went over New York goaltender Corinne Schroeder’s shoulder.
The goal came after Schroeder made 30 straight saves.
The first goal of the game was scored by Emma Woods at 5:01 of the first period. The play began when Madison Packer tapped the puck along the boards back to Jaime Bourbonnais at the point, who quickly moved to the middle and fired at the net. The shot hit traffic in front but it was Woods who found the puck and put it behind Frankel to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Schroeder made 34 saves in the game, including 14 in the second period where her team was outshot by seven. The victory is her fifth of the season, tied with Minnesota’s Nicole Hensley for second-most amongst all goaltenders.
Frankel made 22 saves in the loss.
Up next, Boston hosts Ottawa on Monday for an afternoon game previously scheduled for January 8. New York hits the ice on Wednesday for a game at UBS Arena against Montréal.
